Sanford G. Price and Isabelle Price Barbee Chair in Teaching,
Advising and Learning
The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences is
honored to have received an endowment designed to recognize, support,
and improve teaching and advising practices and strengthen the learning
environment.
Why This Gift?
William H. "Bill" Price established the endowment in memory of his
father and his aunt. Sanford G. "Sandy" Price was an advocate for
higher education and Ohio State, helping with recruitment of students
and advising deans (particularly in agriculture and nursing) on ways to
recruit and support students. Isabelle Price Barbee had a longtime
interest in the Audubon Club and the Easter Seals organization, and was
involved with the American Red Cross. She was a generous supporter of
Ohio State during her lifetime.
Testing testing testing, okay, testing.
Both his father and aunt instilled in Bill a strong belief in the
enduring value of education. His selection of the scope of emphasis for
the endowment was also influenced in part by an experience that
occurred in the early 1980's, when his daughter's career path was
significantly influenced in a positive way by advice she received from
Dr. William Tyznik, then a professor in animal sciences.
In 1999 Mr. Price established a scholarship fund at OSU in memory of
his father and aunt. While beneficial to the recipients, he felt the
impact of that gift was too limited, in that it only benefited those
who received the scholarship; a small number relative to the number of
students At Ohio State. He and his family's interest was far more
transformational - improvement of counseling, teaching, and the
learning environment. He decided the establishment of an endowed chair
could accomplish just that.
It was Bill Price's intent that this fund "ultimately impact the youth,
who are the future of our country."
He stated, "If our outstanding faculty are superior teachers who
understand the learning process, our young people will be inspired and
will become better citizens and professionals. Each will learn to think
critically, judge wisely, and create imaginatively."
It is through the commitment to learning and the creative imagination
of Bill Price that the legacy of his father and aunt will live on
through the Price Chair.
