Details

Purpose:
To support faculty in carrying out professional development activities helpful to them as they strive to become more effective teachers.
Any professional development activity will be considered. See the following possibilities (for illustrative purposes only):

  • New course development
  • Attendance at conferences focused on teaching and learning
  • Spending time at another campus working with a college (e.g., on a course you would like to develop or strengthen)
  • Development of a particular teaching skill (e.g., handling large enrollment course, using the Socratic method, incorporating learning into a course)

Amount of Awards: 

  • Individual faculty proposals will be eligible for $2,000-$5,000 in funding
  • Joint proposals (two or more faculty working together) may be eligible for funding over $5,000

Proposal Outlines should include the following:

  • Title
  • Description of the idea
  • Description of the course/courses that would be enhanced and/or a description of the teaching skills that would be enhanced
  • Plan of action (procedures)
  • Timeline
  • Budget - the amount requested and proposed used of funds
  • Signatures of faculty member(s) and appropriate department chair/school director

Selection Process:

A subcommittee of the FAES Academy for Teaching Excellence will select successful proposals to be funded. Selections will be based on the following criteria:

  • Persuasive rationale
  • Clear plan of action
  • Appropriate scope - goal(s) that can be accomplished within the time frame and resources available as described in the proposal
  • Evidence it will provide professional development for the faculty member
  • Evidence it will enhance learning

Submission Deadlines:

Awards will be made each autumn and spring. Autumn proposals are due by September 1, with awards being announced by October 1. Spring proposals are due April 1 with awards announced by May 1.
