In Spring 2012, the Department of Chemistry will be offering a quarter version of Chem 1210, the new first semester General Chemistry course. The course number in Spring is "Chem 131" but the identifier next to it in SIS will be "General Chemistry 1210." The course will be worth 6 quarter hours, and will have two 1 hour 48 minute lectures, one 2 hour 48 minute lab, and one 48 minute recitation per week. Chem 131 in Spring 2012 will "map to" Chem 1210 at 4 semester hours. Any student who needs a full year of General Chemistry but wants to start the sequence in the Spring should be directed to enroll in Chem 131. After Chem 131, students will be able to continue into second semester General Chemistry, Chem 1220, in Summer 2012, Autumn 2012, or subsequent semesters. We do not have a convenient way to "advertise" Chem 131 (1210) for Spring and the target audience for this course won't have any way of knowing of its existence or its benefits, so we are asking you to help us get the word out. If you advise freshmen or other students who might be ready to start their Gen Chem sequence this Spring, we hope you will send them an e-mail with the above information. (If you know of a way for Chemistry to convey this information to the target audience, we'd be happy to hear your suggestions.) If you or your students have questions about Chem 131 vs 121, you may call the Undergraduate Chemistry Office at 292-6009 to speak to me or Dr. Mike Chang, or you may e-mail us at chemadvisors@chemistry.ohio-state.edu. Alternatively, you may contact the Chem 131 course instructor, Dr. Steve Kroner, at skroner@chemistry.ohio-state.edu. We will also offer one lecture section of traditional Chem 121 in SP12. Any student who needs ONLY Chem 121 should be encouraged to take the traditional Chem 121.
