About this program

About

Animal sciences is the study of the basic principles of science and their application to the biological, economic and environmental aspects of livestock production, companion animals, and the processing of animal products. Students will receive a firm foundation in the basic science disciplines, which include population and molecular genetics, nutrition, physiology (lactational, reproductive and growth), biotechnology, behavior, management, and welfare.

Specializations

Animal Biosciences is designed for students interested in graduate school within the sciences, and pre-professional pathways like veterinary school. You’ll develop a well-rounded foundation in anatomy and physiology, nutrition, genetics, immunology, behavior and welfare, and animal health—supported by hands-on learning. This specialization helps you connect rigorous science to real animal systems while preparing for a wide range of careers in animal health, research and related industries.

Animal Industries dives into animal behavior, management, health, nutrition, genetics, economics and marketing—then put those skills to work through labs, facilities and field experiences. You’ll complete an internship that helps you build your résumé and professional network before you graduate. Whether you see yourself working in sales, production, animal services or commodity organizations, you’ll graduate career-ready—backed by faculty expertise and industry connections.

Veterinary Technology gives you the opportunity to earn two credentials in four years through a joint program with Columbus State Community College: a B.S. in Agriculture from Ohio State plus an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology. You’ll build clinical skills in radiology, anesthesiology, surgery techniques, parasitology, and small-animal health—while also studying animal nutrition, physiology, genetics, behavior, and management. The program includes multiple clinical experiences in settings such as private practices, research centers, specialty hospitals, diagnostic labs, or zoos. Graduate prepared for licensure and ready for high-impact roles in veterinary care and animal health. Along the way, you’ll learn from faculty and professionals who understand today’s animal-health challenges and how to deliver compassionate, high-quality care.

Nutrition shapes health and performance—from cells to whole-body systems. In this interdisciplinary program between Animal Sciences and Human Nutrition, you’ll build a strong foundation in biology and chemistry while studying digestion, absorption, metabolism and nutrient requirements across species. Hands-on coursework connects science to practical decision-making in health and wellness, food and animal industries, and research. This pathway also supports students planning for advanced professional programs, including veterinary or human medicine, pharmacy, dentistry or graduate study—so you can tailor electives to your goals.
