About this program
Animal Sciences - Horse Specialization majors pursue an Associate of Science degree which allows them to gain hands-on experience prior to finishing a Bachelor of Science degree program in Columbus. The program in Wooster enables students to complete approximately 50 percent of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences or in another program with an equine minor.
Technical instruction includes hands-on course work in horse management; horse health; feeding and nutrition; equine breeding and genetics; and equine business and facility management. Additional sciences and more advanced math is required for this degree compared to the Associate of Applied Science degrees.
Practicum is required of students in Animal Sciences - Horse Specialization. This is a supervised, practical work experience that provides students with the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classrooms and at the Ohio State ATI horse facilities. Students are encouraged to think independently and evaluate and solve problems under the guidance of the horse facilities manager. Students assist in the daily husbandry and care of the horses.

After students complete a bachelor's degree within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University, their career opportunities will vary depending upon their major. However, students who pursue employment within the horse industry will find opportunities in sales, service, production, management, and supervision.
