About
Animal production and management at Ohio State ATI prepares you for hands-on careers in the livestock industry. In this Associate of Applied Science program, you’ll build technical knowledge in animal care and production while also developing the business skills needed to support successful livestock operations.
You’ll study the principles and daily practices behind livestock production, including nutrition, reproduction, genetics, live and carcass evaluation, and animal health and management. You’ll also strengthen your understanding of accounting and farm business so you can make informed decisions in production and management settings.
Specializations available
Students in the program choose a species specialization in beef, small ruminant, dairy, horse or swine.

Program components
Build your skills with internships
Students in Animal Production and Management complete a full-time industry internship. Ohio State ATI helps you find internship opportunities in the United States and abroad. These internships help you explore careers before graduation while gaining practical experience in a professional setting. Students are typically paid, graded on job performance and awarded academic credit for internships.
You will also complete practicum, a supervised practical work experience at the Ohio State ATI Farm or Equine Center. During practicum, you’ll apply the skills you learned in class while working under the guidance of the facilities manager. This experience helps you think independently, solve problems and build confidence through daily hands-on work.
Hands-on learning at our specialized livestock facilities
Students in this program learn in specialized facilities and equipment at Ohio State ATI, including:
- A 125-cow herd of Angus, Murray Grey and crossbred cattle
- A 1,700-acre farm laboratory
- A beef cattle handling facility designed by Temple Grandin
- Access to CFAES Wooster’s 300-head sheep flock
- A 24-sow farrow-to-finish swine operation that produces market hogs and feeder pigs annually
