Without white oak, there is no bourbon. At least probably none you’d care to drink. This keystone species provides the flavor, color and liquid-tight seal essential for the industry’s signature, charred barrels. To protect this $30 billion economic engine, Ohio State Extension teams are leading statewide efforts to ensure white oak regeneration, securing the future of both Ohio’s forests and favorite spirits.
