Checklist for Complying With Endangered Species Protection Requirements on Pesticide Labels

Checklist for complying with endangered species protection requirements on pesticide labels, including checking the pesticide labels, calculating the points for a given field, and checking the EPA website within six months of herbicide application.

ANR-0222

Check the pesticide label for these requirements

  • Mandatory spray-drift mitigations.
  • Mandatory runoff mitigation measures, noting the number of points you need to comply.
  • If mitigation measures are limited to specific geographic regions, the label will direct you to check the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Bulletins Live! Two website (https://www.epa.gov/endangered-species/bulletins-live-two-view-bulletins).

Calculate total number of points for a given field

  • Use the EPA’s mitigation point calculator (https://www.epa.gov/pesticides/runofferosion-mitigation-calculator) to determine the total number of points achieved for each field where the pesticide will be applied. The Google Chrome browser is recommended for the calculator.
  • PDF and Excel versions of the calculator can be found under ESA resources in the Additional Resources section.
  • Determine whether you have enough points, and if not, implement additional mitigation measures to reach the target.

Check Bulletins Live! Two

  • Check the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Bulletins Live! Two website (https://www.epa.gov/endangered-species/bulletins-live-two-view-bulletins) within six months of herbicide application.
  • To view the bulletin, enter the location, date, and pesticide registration number for a given product.
  • Review the bulletin to determine if any additional mitigation measures are required. The bulletin may or may not impose additional limitations.

Save results for records

  • It is not required, but it is recommended that these documents be saved in a printed or electronic format. Both the EPA calculator and Bulletins Live! Two offer the option to download a PDF.
  • In the event of off-target movement, documentation ensures compliance can be verified.
