Writing your own story

Margaret Peterson Haddix

Margaret Peterson Haddix is a New York Times bestselling author of more than 40 books for kids and teens, but she got her start as a writer in Fayette County Ohio 4-H.

As an older youth, she honed her writing skills through projects on journalism, creative writing, and genealogy: “The writing projects I took in high school connected directly to the careers I’ve pursued. Before my first book was published, I worked as a newspaper reporter, so covering the Fayette County Fair as a 4-H’er played a role in that career, too.”

In addition to helping develop her writing abilities, Haddix’s time in 4-H taught her other skills that have been invaluable in her career.

“I learned how to see a project through from start to finish, and how to pace myself with an endeavor that took longer than just a few weeks. I am grateful for the lessons from my long-ago 4-H experiences every time I write a new book.”
