Family Support

Supporting your student’s journey

Choosing a college is a big decision for your student and you. We’re here to provide support and clear information every step of the way.

Together, we’ll help your student find the right path, on a campus where they feel known, challenged and supported.

Your role matters

You’re an important part of this decision, too. You know your student better than anyone and even though they might not say it, they value your input. At CFAES, we see families and supporters as partners in this process.

What makes our college different?

CFAES is Ohio State’s cornerstone college for food, agriculture and environmental sciences. Our purpose is simple: We Sustain Life — through teaching, research, outreach and workforce development that make everyday life better in Ohio and around the world.

  • Hands-on, applied learning from day one
  • Career-connected programs and fairs to get students in front of employers
  • Supportive community and resources to support students every step of the way
  • Multiple pathways to success in on the Columbus campus, ATI in Wooster and other regional campuses

Internships

Your student could intern with local farms, nonprofits, laboratories, industry partners, government agencies and global companies. Our advisors and career services help them find the right fit and make the most of each experience.

Real-world experience

Coursework includes project with community partners, research with faculty, fieldwork and problem solving in real settings.

Employer and industry connections

Our strong relationships with employers across Ohio and beyond. Career fairs, networking events and classroom speakers help students meet professionals and build connections that often lead to jobs.

Graduate and professional school paths

Many students use their CFAES degree as a springboard to graduate school or professional programs in areas like veterinary medicine, environmental law, public health, education and business. Faculty and advisors guide students through the application process and next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Question
How safe is campus?

Answer
Ohio State takes student safety very seriously. Each campus has its own police division, secure residence halls, emergency alert systems and late-night transportation options. We also offer safety education and resources so students know how to look out for themselves and one another.

Question
How does advising work?

Answer
From their first semester, your student is matched with an academic advisor who helps them choose classes, understand requirements and plan for internships or research. As they move through their program, faculty mentors and career advisors join that support team.

Question
What if my student is undecided?

Answer
Many students start college still exploring their options – that’s normal. We offer exploration pathways, first-year survey course and advising that helps students learn about different majors, career paths and strengths before they decide.

Question
What can we anticipate as an outcome for paying for college?

Answer
Our grads go on to careers in science, business, education, government, nonprofits, agriculture and more. Many are employed within six months of graduation or continue their education with professional or graduate school. Our Career Development offices has a list of in-demand jobs looking for employees. That's a great place to start.

Question
How do we get help with financial aid?

Answer
Ohio State’s financial aid staff can help your family understand the FAFSA, scholarships, grants, loans and payment options. Connect with them online, by phone or during campus visits to ask specific questions to your situation.
