Cultivating a Cure Event Exceeds Fundraising Records

Cathann A. Kress, vice president for agricultural administration and dean of CFAES, led a panel discussion on the intersection of agriculture and cancer research.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th annual Cultivating a Cure event exceeded previous records for this event, raising $156,485 to support cancer treatment and prevention research. Nearly 350 attendees gathered at Hirsch Fruit Farm in Ross County to contribute to this cause, benefiting The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) and The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES).

Established in 2011 by the Porteus family, Cultivating a Cure was founded to honor their passion for cancer research and prevention while also remembering those who have fought and continue to fight cancer. Over the years, the event has raised more than $1.3 million, showcasing the agribusiness community’s dedication to addressing cancer.

One of the purposes of Cultivating a Cure is to connect agricultural leaders so they can discuss issues facing the agricultural industry and support cancer treatment and prevention research.

Cathann A. Kress, vice president for agricultural administration and dean of CFAES, led a panel discussion on the intersection of agriculture and cancer research.

“Events like Cultivating a Cure highlight the critical connection between healthy food and cancer prevention,” Kress said. “Our collaborative efforts in agriculture and health research are essential in the fight against cancer.”

The panel featured insights from Jessica Cooperstone, associate professor in the CFAES Departments of Horticulture and Crop Science (HCS) and Food Science and Technology, Radin Sadre, assistant professor in HCS and Marília Chiavegato, assistant professor in HCS and the CFAES Department of Animal Sciences, who shared their interdisciplinary research on health and cancer prevention.

Additionally, Dr. Alex Wilson, a radiation oncologist at Adena Cancer Center, emphasized the collaboration between Adena Cancer Center, the local hospital in Chillicothe, and OSUCCC – James.

This event wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration among the agricultural community, Nationwide, and The Ohio State University. Donations can be made at ofb.ag/cacgift.

The 15th annual Cultivating a Cure event is set for Aug. 24, 2025, at Arlington Acres in Seneca County.
