COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Most woodland owners will sell timber from their land only once, maybe twice, in their lives, said Kathy Smith, forestry specialist with Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

So they should learn all they can before they decide to do it.

“They should make sure the choice they make is both good for them and good for their woods, both today and into the future,” said Smith, who coordinates the college’s Ohio Woodland Stewards Program.

Two upcoming workshops sponsored by the program will help people do just that.

“Selling Timber? Consider This …” takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 25, in Bucyrus and on Tuesday, March 25, in Medina. The hours, 6-9 p.m., and topics will be the same at both locations.

“We’ll cover how to best approach the selling of trees to meet one’s goals and objectives,” said Smith, one of the workshop’s instructors. “We’ll look at marketing options and best management practices, and we’ll help people understand Ohio’s timber market.”

Registration for the workshops costs $15 person.

The Feb. 25 workshop takes place in the lower level conference room of the Crawford County Courthouse, 112 E. Mansfield St., Bucyrus. Participants can register online at http://go.osu.edu/bq7. The registration deadline is Feb. 21.

On March 25, the workshop meets at the University of Akron’s Medina County University Center, 6300 Technology Lane, Medina. Online registration is at http://go.osu.edu/b4Q. The registration deadline is March 21.

The workshop brochures, which include a registration form, can be downloaded at http://go.osu.edu/brJ for Bucyrus and http://go.osu.edu/brN for Medina.

The Woodland Stewards program is run by Ohio State University Extension, the college’s statewide outreach arm.

The workshops qualify for three credit hours for landowners participating in the Ohio Forest Tax Law program.
