Jan. 13 Program to Look at New Central Ohio Clean Water Effort

COLUMBUS, Ohio — January’s Environmental Professionals Network “Breakfast Club” program will feature a new planning study to ensure clean, secure water for central Ohio.

Called Sustaining Scioto, the study is looking at future growth needs and climate change impacts in the upper Scioto River watershed. Six partners are behind it, led by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. The watershed lies northwest of Columbus.

The program takes place from 7:15-9:15 a.m. on Jan. 13 in Ohio State University’s Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive, in Columbus.

Speaking will be David Rutter, the commission’s watershed coordinator, and Lisa Jeffrey, P.E., managing engineer and senior associate with the engineering firm Brown and Caldwell, a partner on the study.  

“We’re fortunate that central Ohio water resource leaders are trying to project the impacts of climate change on water resources, infrastructure and related matters, and also to engage stakeholders to help plan for these changes well in advance,” said David Hanselmann, the network’s coordinator and a lecturer in Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources.

The network is a service of the school, which is part of the university’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

The project relies on significant analyses of models and data by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Ohio Water Science Center, another partner on the study, Hanselmann said.

Registration for the program is open to both members and nonmembers of the network, including students. The cost is $10 or $15, depending on payment method, and includes a full breakfast. A reduced rate for students is available. Details and a link to online registration are at go.osu.edu/vXb.

Sponsoring the event are Brown and Caldwell and the Water Management Association of Ohio. SENR, Ohio State’s Office of Energy and Environment, and the Energy Management and Sustainability program in the university’s Office of Student Life are providing breakfast for students who attend.
