Tip 1: Helping farmers prepare for weather challenges: Ohio just experienced its wettest year on record. Along with more rainfall, the state is experiencing more intense downpours, which can put fields at risk of erosion and could send phosphorus and nitrogen from fertilizer into nearby waterways. A conference aims to help farmers prepare for the challenges resulting from a wetter, warmer climate. “Climate Smart: Farming with Weather Extremes” on Thursday, July 18, at the Der Dutchman restaurant in Plain City will include a host of speakers addressing not only climate trends, but also the pros and cons of various ways to manage water on fields. The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) is cosponsoring the event with the State Climate Office of Ohio. For more information, including an agenda about Climate Smart, which is free and open to the public, visit agcrops.osu.edu/events/climate-smart-farming-weather-extremes. To register, visit go.osu.edu/ClimateSmart.

Tip 2: Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloom Forecast: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s annual harmful algal bloom forecast for western Lake Erie, including reports on Maumee River nutrient loading and on recent research aimed at solving the problem, is set for Thursday, July 11, at The Ohio State University Stone Laboratory at Put-in-Bay. Phosphorus from fertilizer and manure runoff is one of the causes of the harmful algal blooms plaguing Lake Erie and other Ohio water bodies in recent years. The blooms have hurt tourism, recreation, real-estate values, and aquatic life, and sometimes they produce toxins that make water unsafe to drink, as happened in Toledo for several days in 2014. The July 11 forecast will be issued from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include presentations by scientists from NOAA, Heidelberg University, and Stone Lab. There’s a webinar option if you can’t attend in person. For more information, visit go.osu.edu/Czdq or contact Ohio Sea Grant’s Jill Jentes Banicki at banicki.1@osu.edu or 614-292-8975.
