News Tips and Events for the Week of March 5

Tip 1: Flooding Solutions: Cincinnati just suffered its worst Ohio River flooding since 1997. So the timing is unfortunately good for the next Environmental Professionals Network breakfast program. Called “Flooding: A National, State and Local Issue — We Are All Part of the Solution,” the event features expert talks and Q&A sessions on flooding issues and management. It’s at Ohio State’s Columbus campus on March 6. Details: go.osu.edu/CJBb. Contact Molly Hardesty, hardesty.112@osu.edu.

Tip 2: Clean Beach Benefits: Cleaning up beaches could boost local economies; the efforts are “likely to prove cost effective.” So says a new study co-authored by Tim Haab, professor in CFAES’s Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics. It’s the first study to compare the amount of marine debris with beachgoers’ behavior and to put a dollar value on cleaning up beaches. Read more: go.osu.edu/CJCB. Tip 3: Mushrooms’ Magic: A new study by Jason Slot, assistant professor in CFAES’s Department of Plant Pathology, says psychedelic mushrooms probably developed their “magical” properties as a defense against fungi-eating insects. The study helps explain a biological mystery, but also could open the door to new treatments for neurological disease. Read more: go.osu.edu/CJCS. Contact Jason Slot, slot.1@osu.edu, 614-688-2122.
