COLUMBUS, Ohio –Economists from Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences will discuss sustainable development April 4 during the annual Ohio State University Provost’s Discovery Themes Lecturer Program and COMPAS (Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society) conference.
Elena Irwin, an environmental and urban economics professor, and Ian Sheldon, an international trade expert, will discuss sustainable development during the closing session of the COMPAS event. Irwin is a co-investigator on several research projects funded by the National Science Foundation, including a coupled natural-human systems project focused on farmer decision-making and Lake Erie water quality. Sheldon’s current work includes an examination of the effects of policy on trade in ethanol and analysis of China’s exchange rate policies. He is also working on issues related to carbon tariffs and the impact of intellectual property rights on U.S. seed exports.
Their remarks will be part of a panel discussion at 3 p.m. in Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N. High St., with Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development at Columbia, who will give a keynote address, “The Age of Sustainable Development.”
Sachs is special advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the Millennium Development Goals and is director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. He is co-founder and Chief Strategist of Millennium Promise Alliance, and is director of the Millennium Villages Project.
The presentation will culminate a daylong conference that features a group of experts presenting on a wide range of topics beginning at 8:30 a.m. in room 165 in the Thompson Library, 1858 Neil Ave.
The presentation and conference are free and open to the public.
The conference is offered by the Ohio State University Center for Ethics and Human Values as part of its university-wide series, “Conversations on Morality, Politics, and Society” (COMPAS). The COMPAS program aims to demonstrate how the university’s comprehensive intellectual resources can be aligned along their ethical dimension in order to help solve serious issues confronting society.
