Tip 1: Bee Expert in Ohio: CFAES’s Bee Lab is co-sponsoring a volunteer training session, three workshops, and a lecture and book signing this week by bee expert Olivia Carril, co-author of The Bees in Your Backyard: A Field Guide to North America’s Bees. The events’ focus will be on identifying Ohio’s native bees and helping them thrive in the garden. She will be available for interviews with reporters during the volunteer training session, which is during the day June 6 in CFAES’s Secrest Arboretum in Wooster (best times: noon or 4 p.m.); and before and after her lecture and book signing, which are at 7 p.m. on the same day in Alliance. Contact Denise Ellsworth, program director of CFAES’s Honey Bee and Native Pollinator Education Program, 330-495-1284, ellsworth.2@osu.edu, if you’re interested in talking to Carril.
Tip 2: Barley and Me: Growing barley for malting will be the chief topic when CFAES holds its Small Grains Field Day on June 12 in Wooster. CFAES scientists will share new information about barley varieties, contracts, diseases and more. Malted barley is used to make beer, and Ohio’s acreage of the crop is rising due to the state’s growing craft beer industry. Rory Lewandowski, an educator with CFAES’s Ohio State University Extension outreach arm, is organizing the program and can answer reporters’ questions about it: lewandowski.11@osu.edu, 330-264-8722.
