Western Agronomy Field Day
SOUTH CHARLESTON, Ohio — Researchers from The Ohio State University (OSU) will be showcasing research on corn and soybeans at the Western Agricultural Research Station Field Day on July 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The research station is located at 7721 South Charleston Pike, South Charleston; and the field day will feature tours of the research plots and research presentations about innovative ideas and concepts for assessing soil conditions for improved planting decisions and utilizing new research for fertilizer and nutrient recommendations. Other topics in include weed and pest management.
The agenda for the field day will feature the following presentations:
- Assessing Crop Inputs: Dr. Robert Mullen, chief agronomist with Nutrien, will discuss nutrient availability, usage and management for domestic and international crop production.
- Weed Challenges this Season: Dr. Mark Loux, Ohio State weed science, will talk about the weed challenges experienced by corn and soybean growers this season. In addition to showcases current weed science research, attendees will be able to see the evolution of weed resistance in Ohio with the weed screen plots.
- Ohio Soil Fertility Research: Dr. Steve Culman, Ohio State soil science, will highlight on-farm research that is contributing to the new, updated corn and soybean fertilizer recommendations that will be unveiled later this year.
- Water Quality and Fertilizer Application Research: Dr. Libby Dayton, Ohio State water quality science, will focus on the research related to phosphorus and updating Ohio’s Phosphorus Risk Index.
- Precision Planting and SmartFirmers: Dr. Alex Lindsey, Ohio State agronomy, will discuss the interaction of organic matter, soil temperature and soil type on seed depth when planting. SmartFirmer is a sensor that measures conditions in the furrow to aid farmers in planting decisions to optimize germination.
- Disease and Insect Scouting School: Dr. Kelley Tilmon and Dr. Andy Michel, Ohio State entomology, along with Dr. Anne Dorrance, Ohio State plant pathology will feature a hands-on program on mid-season scouting in corn and soybeans for insects and disease. The researchers will also discuss pest activity that has occurred during the growing season and what to expect before harvest.
