5 Tips for Grilling the Perfect Burger

Become known as the grill master at your next cookout by using these burger grilling tips from Michael Cressman, barbeque science professor in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at The Ohio State University.

1. Before cooking the burger, use your thumb to put a slight indentation in the middle of the patty. This technique will help the patty stay flat and not draw up into a ball.

2. Don't overcook. On a 450℉ grill a typically sized patty, four inches in diameter and ¾ of an inch thick, should cook in about 8-10 minutes.

3. Don't flip too soon. You'll know it’s time to flip when your burgers easily release from the grill surface.

4. Use a meat thermometer to make sure your burger is safe to eat. You should cook ground meat to an internal temperature of 160℉. Place the thermometer in the center of the patty for the most accurate reading. Make sure you aren’t touching the cooking surface.

5. Let the burgers rest for a few minutes before serving to ensure the meat stays moist and tender. Add a bun, condiments, and wait for the cheers of your adoring fans.
