Hitachi SU5000 Scanning Electron Microscope
High-quality nano-scale imaging for biology and materials science. Located in Selby Hall.
Overview
The Hitachi SU5000 is a Schottky field-emission scanning electron microscope that provides high-quality nanoscale imaging for biology and materials science. The EM Wizard interface guides users through optimal-resolution imaging and analysis, making it accessible even to first-time SEM users.
Key Features
- Schottky electron source for high brightness imaging even at low accelerating voltage settings
- Simultaneous secondary electron (SE) and back-scattered electron (BSE) detectors — overlay images reveal sample composition and topography together
- Rapid sample exchange in under three minutes
- 3D multi-finder tool allows easy sample tilting and rotation while maintaining focus
- Bruker ESPRIT Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDX) for elemental microanalysis
Common Applications
- Nano-scale imaging of biological and material samples
- Surface topography and composition analysis
- Elemental microanalysis using EDX
- Imaging of coated/sputtered specimens for high-resolution detail
Sample Preparation Services
We provide a full range of sample preparation techniques for biological and material samples, including critical point drying and coating with platinum.
