Fair activities turn into lifelong learning
Lausche building judging sign ready for 4-H members

The Ohio State Fair is officially here — and while we love the corn dogs, lemon shake-ups, and dizzying rides as much as anyone, we’re even more excited about what’s happening behind the scenes: Learning, leadership, and connections being made through the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) and Ohio 4-H.

For generations, CFAES has proudly partnered with the Ohio State Fair to showcase the best of agriculture, science, and youth development. This fair isn’t just about funnel cakes (though let’s be honest, we’re not skipping those) — it’s about giving our communities a glimpse into how we support Ohioans every day, from classrooms to barnyards and everything in between.

At the heart of our presence is Ohio 4-H, the youth development program delivered through Ohio State University Extension and CFAES. Each year, almost 12,000 4-H members from 80 Ohio counties make their way to the fair, bringing projects spanning from robotics to dairy cows and rabbits wearing historical costumes (yes, that’s a thing).

But 4-H isn’t just about blue ribbons and barn time. It’s also a powerful launchpad for young people to discover their interests and explore future careers. The fair offers a unique opportunity for youth to engage with the broader CFAES community — interacting with Extension professionals, faculty and staff who support and inspire the next generation of scientists, educators, veterinarians, engineers and community leaders.

Last year alone, over 200 CFAES employees contributed more than 2,000 hours to support youth events at the fair, joined by over 1,200 adult volunteers who together gave 12,700 hours of their time. That’s the kind of dedication that brings 4-H to life — and gives kids the spotlight they deserve.

“When 4-H members showcase their projects and speak with judges at the Ohio State Fair, they’re not just competing — they’re building real-world skills, supported every step of the way by the preparation they have had in Ohio 4-H and the CFAES community.”Crystal Ott, 4-H Foundation Director

You’ll find our team spread across the fairgrounds:

  • In Gilligan Complex, where animal sciences majors run tours for the public to learn more about animal agriculture.
  • In the Natural Resources Park, where Master Gardners answer your questions about plants and garden maintenance.
  • In the Lausche Youth Exploration Space, where young leaders present their projects with pride.
  • Throughout the livestock rings, show barns, and judging halls, where Extension professionals and volunteers are making the magic happen.

Whether you’re a fair veteran or a first-time visitor, we invite you to make CFAES a stop on your journey. Ask a question, snap a photo, meet a 4-Her, or learn something new — you never know what might spark your curiosity.

Come find us at the Ohio State Fair and see how CFAES is helping grow the future — one leader at a time.

We’ll be here all 12 days. Just follow the smell of sawdust and science.
