COLUMBUS, Ohio — For Camila Perdoncini Carvalho, the journey to earning a PhD at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) has been filled with challenges, leadership opportunities, and invaluable connections that will last a lifetime.
As a spring graduate from the CFAES Department of Plant Pathology, Carvalho reflects on how her time at Ohio State shaped her, both as a scholar and as a leader.
“I’m proud to say I’ll be graduating as a PhD student, and graduating from the one and only The Ohio State University makes this accomplishment even more special,” Carvalho said. “My time here pursuing my PhD at Ohio State has been wonderful, and I’m excited about the future ahead for all of us.”
Carvalho’s academic journey took place primarily on the CFAES Wooster campus, although she often found herself navigating the bustling Columbus campus as well.
“I still get lost, but it’s always exciting to come to main campus,” she said, smiling. “The opportunities here are endless.”
Carvalho credited the wealth of opportunities available to graduate students at Ohio State, regardless of the campus. She highlighted the university’s leadership training programs, as well as its emphasis on social and academic activities. However, managing these opportunities came with a steep learning curve.
“The connections I’ve made here, and the privilege of working under people I look up to, will outlast my time at Ohio State”Camila Carvalho
“As an overachiever with a fear of missing out, I quickly found myself involved in more than I could handle,” Carvalho said. “Time management became one of the first lessons I learned here as a graduate student.”
In addition to her studies, Carvalho’s leadership role as president of the Graduate Student Advisory Council marked a pivotal point in her Ohio State experience.
“During my time as president, we worked on improving the graduate student experience, and I’m proud that most of our goals were achieved with the full support of the college,” she said. “It was great to be part of a college that not only hears us, but also supports our ideas.”
She emphasized that the most valuable aspect of her time at Ohio State wasn’t just the state-of-the-art equipment, but the people.
“Our greatest resource is the quality of the people we surround ourselves with,” Carvalho said. “The connections I’ve made here, and the privilege of working under people I look up to, will outlast my time at Ohio State.”
Carvalho’s time at Ohio State has been a formative chapter in her academic career, and she is ready to step into the next phase of her life, equipped with the tools and experiences that will guide her forward.
“Now that we’ve accomplished our goal, we’ve only just opened the door to what we’ve truly worked so hard to reach,” Carvalho said. “It’s time to contribute, grow, and build on the foundation we’ve fortified here at Ohio State.”
